U OF NC GETS AN ACOUSTICAL BOOST FROM FLYHOUSE ARENAS
University of North Carolina's Carmichael Auditorium has a long and storied history including hosting the 1987 U.S. Olympic Festival volleyball competition, and serving as home to Carolina's wrestling, basketball, volleyball, and gymnastics.
In the process of undergoing a $20M renovation project, USC turned to Flyhouse Arenas to design, fabricate, and install an acoustical baffle system to bring their out-of-date arena in line with current sound control standards.
Carmichael has an angled ceiling laced with prominent ductwork and sprinkler system hardware, as well as myriad lighting fixtures and their support structures - all of which create challenges to an acoutstic installation.
To address these issues, the baffle system has been designed to appear to lay "flat," forming a faux-ceiling that will minimize views of the mechanical systems while simultaneously increasing the arena's aesthetics and acoustic performance.
The design incorporates over 500 customized panels comprising 24,510 sq ft of installation, and the creation of specialized hardware to meet the requirements of all the project stakeholders including the architect, general contractor, and UNC's staff.
